The Easy Way to use Multiple USB Microphones for a Webinar

This short tutorial will walk you through the steps to use two USB microphones (or more) on one Mac for a webinar.

Tools required:

Mac computer with two USB ports

Two USB microphones

Soundflower (free) from http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/

Audio HiJack Pro ($32) http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/

Install Soundflower & Audio Hijack Pro

Download and install Soundflower. It will now show up in your Sound control panel and in other applications as an audio device.

Soundflower is a Mac OS X (10.2 and later) system extension that allows applications to pass audio to other applications. Soundflower is easy to use, it simply presents itself as an audio device, allowing any audio application to send and receive audio with no other support needed. Soundflower is free, open-source, and runs on Mac Intel and PPC computers. (From the Cycling74 Website)

Download and install Audio Hijack Pro. We will be passing the audio from the two microphones into Soundflower using Audio Hijack Pro, and then Soundflower will be then input to GoToWebinar (and Garageband if you want to record audio locally).

Configure Audio Hijack Pro

Plug in both your microphones first. Launch Audio Hijack Pro and click the plus sign in the bottom left to add an audio device.

Set Source Type

Audio Hijack Pro is capable of hijacking many types of devices. in this case we want to use the pull down for Source Type and choose Audio Device.

Set Audio Input Device

Use the pulldown next to the Input Device to choose your first microphone.

Set Audio Output Device

Use the Output Device pulldown to choose Soundflower (2ch) as the output device.

Verify your Settings

You will now see that you have an audio device with the input as your first microphone and the output as Soundflower (2ch). Repeat this process for your second microphone, also setting the output device to Soundflower (2ch).

Start Hijacking

Select the first microphone, then click the Hijack button. It should appear depressed and then you can verify on the right that it shows you’re hijacking and how long you’ve been hijacking. Repeat for your second microphone. Now you have successfully created one audio source out of two USB microphones.

Start the Webinar

Launch GoToWebinar and select the audio source Soundlower (2ch). Test to make sure audio is registering from all the microphones. You’re good to go.

Meet Doug. Doug is the CMO at a start-up B2B company. He has been working extremely hard to hit all of his lead generation numbers this quarter. The website redesign is complete; the consultant he hired has created and is implementing a search engine optimization strategy, the two interns are posting the latest product information to Facebook and Twitter, and he has personally traveled to four industry trade shows so far this year. Doug is feeling pretty confident as the number of leads his team has generated is 25 % above target.

Then Dan, the CEO, calls. The Sales department has been complaining to Dan that they are wasting too much time with the leads that Marketing has generated. Most of the leads were not ready to make a purchase and a majority couldn’t tell the sales rep when they would be ready.

Doug was stunned. He was exceeding all the goals that were set for him but it wasn’t enough.

Doug’s first reaction was to think of ways to generate even more leads but then he remembered a story he had read a few months ago about marketing automation and lead nurturing. He realized that he didn’t need to just generate more leads for Sales but he needed to generate more leads that were ready to buy and so his search for a solution began.

Doug’s story is not unusual among businesses that sell products and services to other businesses. To read more about Doug’s search and perhaps answer some of your nagging questions about marketing automation continue over to Venture Atlanta’s July issue of their Solid State newsletter.
